portrait of designer Charmaine Brown My name is Charmaine G. Brown, and I have been working as an artist and seamtress since 1990. I have created several solo installations, and my work has been shown in numerous museums, galleries, and alternative venues, both nationally and abroad. My artwork has also been featured on and in several literary books and journals on art, culture and disability. I became involved with theatrical costume experiences in college, later becoming a contract costume designer for the New Mexico Ballet Company in 1992.

Past honors include: Quality of Life Grant by the CRPF (2003); Museum of New Mexico-Museum of Fine Arts, Friends of Contemporary Art Award (1999); Albuquerque Arts Alliance's Wildine Fund for Artists (1999); Solo Exhibition Award, Plan B Evolving Arts of Santa Fe (1998); and DiverseWorks/Mexic-Arte, New Forms Regional Initiatives Grants (1996 and 1994).

I am a master seamstress attracted to the sensual qualities of rich fabrics and decorative elements. I am a skilled corset maker and enjoy creating original, one-of-a-kind corsets, costumes and apparel. I am passionate about costume and art-to-wear fashion. I pride myself on originality, attention to detail and exceptional craftsmanship. I delight in working with clients of all kinds, and I feel the client-couturiere experience is just as rewarding as creating an exceptional garment.
